Outside/ poem by Alexandra Poole

Outside

I sit atop an estuary,
more marshy than last week
and wait for something big to happen
like seeing an Egret or a Heron–
Carpenter Bees storm the roof of the gazebo
an outpouring of their screams, amplified
between wooden slats
One of them makes his way down to me
circling one ear
then the other
Menacingly territorial…
I keep a still air
amidst the blathering buzz
attempt to neutralize myself as a threat
I’m not the outsider you think I am!
This feels akin to trespassing or
trying to reverse the inertia of a catcall
with a humble, friendly disposition
Am I gentrifying the wetlands?
Do the bees feel pushed out?
Is there a place for me,
Yet?
