I Hate the Mall// poem by Ally Ortiz

I Hate the Mall

We’ve been here for three hours

Hollow conversations
bounce across cold marble,
mimicking substance.

Couples get tired of
holding hands.

We haven’t sat down once.

Bodily collisions
aren’t followed by apologies.
Accidental eye contact
is broken in an instant.

We walk into another store.

Shoulders shackled by bags
sway next to empty hands
both in perfect sync.

I decide to ask if you think
we all vibrate at the same frequency,
and you ask me if Nike shoes
are still thirty percent off.
