Pretend you don’t see it/ poem by Anna Celotto

Everything about this place
echoes, undeniably
the one thought, the one wish.
The secret is woven in plain sight
if only one sees with the longing of the soul.

I can pretend not to listen.
Pretend I don’t see it.
But my eyes, of their own accord
search for it where the sky and ocean graze
in every shade of blue.
Every sunrise and sunset whispers it.

I turn to walk.
Which direction? Does it matter?
I walk North but my destination is never near.
How many lifetimes would I need to reach its origin?
Or its end?
I dig my toes deep in sand that is rich, rough.
It holds secrets too.
It mocks, “Do you dare to count me?”

“I belong here,” my soul pines,
then shouts and cries, only to be resigned.
I return every year yearning,
that I too will whisper a secret of my own.
