1906/ poem by Mike Jurkovic

1906
On Telegraph Hill

where we lifted the sheets
to ID our kin

The sky was hot with fire
sick with smoke
Thick and dusty

The hotel on Valencia Street
rested on its side.

And Market Street,
where Mary and I
first tasted cotton candy
was gone.

Twisted brick and family
equal in the ruin.

(Play ye wild angels
Play ye wild angels
like lightening across the sky)
